Is solo female travel safe?
Photo Location: Rishikesh, India
Yes, solo female travel is safe—with the right preparation and mindset. It’s normal to feel scared at first; I definitely did when I set off on my own! The key is understanding that fear is part of the process—it’s your brain acknowledging the unknown. But as you plan, prepare, and gain experience, that fear evolves into confidence and excitement.
How to Stay Safe While Traveling Alone as a Woman:
1. Know Before You Go
Research your destination: the culture, customs, neighborhoods to avoid, and transportation options. For example, when I traveled through the Cyclades, knowing ferry schedules ahead of time saved me from being stranded.

2. Trust Your Gut
If something feels off, it probably is. I’ve had moments when I changed plans last-minute because something didn’t feel right. It’s better to prioritize your safety over sticking to rigid plans.

3. Stay Connected
Share your itinerary with someone back home and check in regularly. Apps like Google Maps and offline messaging tools can also be lifesavers if you’re in an area with spotty Wi-Fi.

4. Be Smart with Accommodations
Choose well-reviewed hostels or hotels in central locations. Social hostels, in particular, are a great option—not only are they usually safe, but you’ll meet other travelers who can offer advice or join you for outings.

5. Blend In
Dressing to match local customs and avoiding flashy jewelry or accessories can help you avoid unwanted attention.

6. Make Connections
Traveling solo doesn’t mean you’re alone. In this post about making connections while traveling in Indonesia, I talk about meeting locals and travelers who helped enrich my journey and add an extra layer of safety.

Is It Normal to Feel Scared About Solo Travel?
Yes! Before my first solo trip, I couldn’t shake the “What ifs.” What if I get lost? What if I feel lonely? What if something goes wrong? These thoughts are normal—and they don’t mean you shouldn’t go. Instead, think of them as opportunities to problem-solve.
When you step out of your comfort zone, you’ll find that you’re far more capable than you think. Plus, if you’re unsure how to start, I’m here to help.
